How to Care for Your Baseball Glove After Playing in the Rain

Spring baseball often comes with unpredictable weather. Drizzle, damp fields, and the occasional rain-soaked inning are part of the game. While players may shake off the rain, your glove can’t do the same.

Leather and water don’t mix well. If your glove gets wet during a game or practice, proper care afterward is essential to prevent stiff leather, cracking, or permanent damage.

Here’s how to take care of your glove after a rainy game so it stays game-ready for years.

Why Water Is Hard on Baseball Gloves

Baseball gloves are made from high-quality leather, and leather behaves a lot like skin. When it gets soaked, it loses natural oils that keep it flexible and strong.

If a glove dries improperly, several problems can occur:

  • Leather becomes stiff or brittle

  • The glove loses its shape

  • Laces weaken or crack

  • The pocket can flatten or warp

Taking a few simple steps after a rainy game helps restore moisture balance and maintain the glove’s structure.

Step 1: Let Your Glove Dry Naturally

The first and most important rule is never rush the drying process.

Do not:

  • Put your glove in the dryer

  • Set it near a heater

  • Leave it in direct sunlight

Heat dries leather too quickly and can cause permanent damage.

Instead:

  • Place the glove in an open, well-ventilated area

  • Allow air to circulate around it

  • Keep it laying open with the palm facing down, or keep ball in the pocket to maintain its shape

Letting the glove dry slowly helps preserve the leather fibers and keeps the glove forming the way it should.

Step 2: Clean the Leather Once It Has Dried

Rain often brings mud, dirt, and field debris along with it. Once the glove has dried, it’s important to remove anything left behind on the leather.

A gentle cleaner helps lift grime without stripping the leather.

Using Leather Spot Cleaner allows you to clean the surface safely while protecting the glove’s leather. With a clean rag, apply a small amount, work it into the leather lightly, then wipe it off.  Repeat if necessary.  Then allow the glove to fully dry again afterward.

Cleaning first ensures the leather is ready to absorb conditioner properly.

Step 3: Restore Moisture with Glove Lotion

When leather gets wet and dries, it loses some of the oils that keep it flexible.

After cleaning and drying, the next step is to replace that lost moisture.

A light conditioner like Glove Lotion is perfect for restoring balance to the leather without making the glove heavy or overly soft.

Apply a small amount to:

  • The pocket

  • The palm

  • The hinge points

  • The laces

Allow the leather to absorb the lotion naturally. This step helps bring the glove back to its ideal feel and flexibility.

Step 4: Let the Glove Rest in the Open

After conditioning, it’s important to let the glove sit in the open air so the leather can fully absorb the lotion.

Avoid stuffing the glove back into a gear bag immediately. Leaving it in a ventilated area allows the leather to settle and prevents trapped moisture.

This simple step helps the glove maintain its proper shape and feel.

Step 5: Protect the Leather Before the Next Rainy Game

Spring seasons often bring multiple wet games, so preparing your glove ahead of time can help protect it.

Before your next practice or game, apply a light coat of Glove Salve.

Glove Salve helps:

  • Condition and protect the leather

  • Maintain flexibility

  • Provide a protective barrier against moisture

While no product can make a glove waterproof, proper conditioning helps leather resist damage from occasional rain exposure.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Playing in the rain is part of baseball. But leaving a wet glove untreated can shorten its life dramatically.

By letting your glove dry properly, cleaning it, restoring lost moisture, and protecting it before the next game, you ensure it stays ready for whatever the season brings.

A quality glove is meant to last for years, and with the right care, even a rainy season won’t stand in its way.
